TAIJI FORM and PUSH HANDS COMPETITION
A. Taiji Form Rules
Each competitor has three (3) minutes to demonstrate the form. After three minutes, “Three Minutes” will be called out. If the competitor has not completed the form, he or she has 30 seconds to finish, after which “Time” will be called. The competitor must stop at this time. If not, one penalty point will be taken against the competitor every 10 seconds beyond the “Time” called, or disqualified by the Head Referee.
The competitor shall wear the proper attire or uniform with soft shoes or socks. No bare feet. The competitor shall demonstrate his or her competency in the form he or she is competing, including the weapons, long or short. The form demonstrated shall be judged by the proficiency, stability, relaxation, uniformity, smoothness, fluency, body stance and height, rooting, and energy expression, as progressing from the beginning to the intermediate and to the advanced level.
B. Taiji Push Hands Rules (Moving Step)
1. A lottery determines which competitors will compete each other. 2. Contestants must wear a T-shirt or uniform top, martial arts pants, and soft shoes or socks. Women must wear chest protection. No jewelry or watches and no bare feet. 3. A contestant must be free of serious infectious diseases or wear approved protections for the body contact competition. 4. Each match consists of three two-minute rounds, with one minute break between the rounds. The clock will stop when the Center Referee stops the action to obtain scoring from the Judges or for other reasons. 5. Competitors must begin each time with three revolutions of the hands attached, such as Peng, Luu, Jhi, Ann, or circling, before executing techniques. The competitors can use all the pushing, tripping, throwing techniques with all body parts, but no punching, kicking, sweeping, attacking on the head, throat, eyes, ears or groin. 6. The competition ring consists of two concentric circles, with the inner circle being 15 feet in diameter and the outer circle being 21 feet in diameter. 7. Scoring: One point is awarded for a technique that forces the opponent outside the inner circle. Three points are awarded if the opponent is forced outside the outer circle. If the technique causes the opponent to fall inside the inner circle, one point will be awarded. If the opponent falls outside the inner circle but inside the outer circle, two points are scored. Techniques forcing the opponent to fall outside the outer circle are awarded four points. Three points or more of the body touch the ground constitute the fall. Stepping on the circle line constitutes outside the circle. For example, if both are out of the inner circle, two points shall be awarded to the one stays inside the outer circle while his or her opponent is outside the outer circle. The most one can be awarded for each action is four points when he or she pushes and causes the opponent to fall outside the outer circle, while he or she stays inside the inner circle and standing. No points are awarded if both fall or out of the same circle irregardless who falls or outs first, because the points are cancelled out. 8. Round Winner: Award of fifteen (15) points to one contestant constitutes the win of the round to the contestant, and the round shall stop. At the end of the two-minute round, the contestant who is awarded with more points shall be the winner of the round. If the competitors are awarded the same points, a tie is called for the round. 9. The contestant who wins the first two rounds win the match. If a tie for the three rounds, an overtime one-minute round or rounds will continue to break the tie.
C. Fouls
1. Surprise attacks or punches. 2. Kicking, sweeping, striking, hitting, or punching. 3. Attacking to the head, throat, eyes, ears, or groin area. 4. Pulling hair or beard or clothes. 5. Using any technique determined to cause injury. 6. Excessive or unruly contact. 7. Unruly conduct, including unsportsmanlike conduct, not following instruction of the referee, not completing the mandatory revolutions, receiving coaching during the round, and the like.
D. Penalties
1. One point is awarded to the opponent of the competitor who committed each foul. However, the opponent will receive 2 points award if one commits a serious foul as judged by the referee, such as intentionally causing injury or attacking to the head, throat, eyes, ears, or groin area which can cause injury. 2. The fifth foul or the second serious foul results in disqualification. 3. Any serious infraction of the rules will result in immediate disqualification.
